How to Pick Glasses That Flatter You

So you're ready to buy new glasses — but before you pick out a pair, it's important to think about what kind of style works best for your facial features — and your lifestyle. "Then you can narrow it down by considering what type of lenses you're looking to get, and then the materials and the special features," says Jenna McGill, marketing manager of fashion at Eyecessorize.com, a campaign by The Vision Council, a non-profit trade organization, to promote eyewear as a fashion accessory. "If you're constantly on the go, you might want something with nose pads or rubberized temples to keep your frames in place, or if you want something lightweight, that will reflect what kind of material [you choose]," she says.

What's more, Todd Hirsch, optical stylist at Celebrity Eyeworks in Sunland, California (they provide eyewear to TV shows and movies), says it's important to establish an in-person connection with an optician, who can help you choose frames that look good on you. "These people are trained to help you not only fill your prescription, but to get to know you, your likes and dislikes — [it's] almost like mixing an optical pharmacist with a fashion stylist," he says.

Whether you've got a round face or a square one, there's a perfect pair out there for you. Follow these tips from the pros to help you pick the right glasses for your face shape.

Heart

jennifer aniston

Heart-shaped faces, like Jennifer Aniston's, have very wide foreheads, high cheekbones, and faces that narrow gradually to the chin. If this describes you, "You want to visually reduce the width of the top of the face and to broaden your tapered chin to bring it more into balance," says Hirsch. "Avoid frames that could 'widen' the width of the forehead or the narrow look of your chin." Look for square or rectangular-shaped frames, similar to what Aniston is wearing above, to add width below your eye line and offset a narrow chin. Another good option for heart-shaped faces are rimless frames, which won't add extra emphasis to any of the areas of the face.

Oblong

Eva Mendes

Oblong faces are longer than they are wide, with straight cheek lines and sometimes a long nose. If this is your face shape, consider new mom (and spokesperson for Vogue Eyewear) Eva Mendes your celebrity inspiration. "Wearing frames that have more depth than width would work really well [for this face shape]," says Hirsch. "A low bridge can also visually shorten the nose." Since this face shape is very angular, look for glasses that have curved edges, like the pair Mendes is wearing above.

Oval

Julia Roberts

If your face is oval-shaped like Julia Roberts, that means you've got balanced proportions, high cheekbones, and a chin that is slightly narrower than your forehead. "Oval faces can wear almost anything," says Hirsch. "A good rule for an oval face is to choose something equal in width, or just slightly wider, to maintain proportions." Glasses with rounded edges, like the pair Roberts is wearing above, won't overwhelm your features.

Round

Hayden Panettiere

For those with round faces (the length and width of your face have the same proportions), like Hayden Panettiere, you'll want to avoid frames that could exaggerate the roundness of the face, says Hirsch. "By adding contrast, you can make a round face appear thinner and longer," he explains. To add such contrast, look for rectangular-shaped frames, similar to what Panettiere is wearing above. And, you can add length to your face by picking a pair of glasses with high or mid-height temples.

Square

Lucy Liu

Glasses-wearer Lucy Liu has a square face shape, which is marked by a strong jawline, broad forehead, and wide chin and cheekbones. "With a square-shaped face, usually you're working with a strong jawline that you'd like to soften up," Hirsch says. To minimize the squareness of your face, opt for a slightly curved and narrow style, like the pair seen on Liu.
